WALTER EMILIO D'SOUZA

Born in Bombay, on the 28th May 1957. He graduated in 1981 from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University Vadodara with a degree in Painting. He completed his MFA in 1983 from the same university in Printmaking.

He has been awarded the National Academy Award for Printmaking by the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 2004. In 1995 was nominated Member Biennial Committee 3rd Bharat Bhavan International Biennial of Prints,Bhopal, India. In 1997 was made Commissioner 4th Bharat Bhavan International Biennial of Prints Bhopal, India. He has held 8 solo exhibitions in India.

His participation in group exhibitions representing the country include the 7th International Print Triennial, Alva Alto Museum Finland, Amin Gulgee Gallery Karachi Pakistan, 3rd Bangladesh biennial Dhaka Bangladesh, Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery Vancouver Canada ,Multiple Encounters -Manhattan Graphic Centre ,New York ,USA. and the 7th International Print Biennale ,Versailles, France. He has participated in artist workshops and camps in Turkey, Bali, Pakistan besides all over India.

Walter broadly defines his work as ‘Man the settler has been taking a toll on this planet. He has key words for it all to smother himself, and he carries on accumulating possessions -a wonderful collection too. Using them he's moved on, like we know it today, a most fascinating behaviour.’

Besides his site specific commissions his work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art ,Delhi ,the Lalit Kala Akademi New Delhi and the British Museum London.

Walter lives and works out of Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Aldona, Goa.
