born in Goa. He graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Mumbai, in 1988, and post graduated in Painting from M. S. University of Baroda in 1990. In 1998 on invitation he completed a Residency at AR.CO, in Lisbon, Portugal. He has lectured in history of art, drawing and painting for advanced classes at the Goa College of Art.
Mesquita is the recipient of awards and honors in the form of scholarships, fellowships, artist in residencies, and invitational participation in national and international shows.
He has participated in various exhibitions in India from 1988 onwards on invitation which include the 3rd and 6th Bharath Bhavan Biennial of Contemporary Indian Art, Bhopal, 7th Triennale Lalit Kala Akademi, ‘Memos for the New Millennium From Artist of a Moulting World’ at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Mumbai. ‘The Bodied Self’, at Sans Tache Gallery, Mumbai and “Strangeness” Anant Art Gallery, Kolkata. The Sacred’, Galleria, New Delhi. He has represented India in many international art exhibitions in Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Egypt, Finland, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Taiwan, China and the USA.
Amongst the various prizes awarded he is the recipient of the National Fellowship, from the Government of India in 1993 and the Excellence Award: Emerging Artist of India, at the Harmony Show 2000, in Mumbai. His works are in the various public and private collections the world over.
He elucidates on his works as….“The practice in my paintings is described through the combative posture delineated. A position which manifest itself, by regaining the self through the exploration and understanding of peripheries and boundaries. Boundaries, that constrain the human sentiment to perceive alternate realities, realities that are concerned with all constant human activity, cerebral and physical.
Peripheries that divide the longitude lines of reason, stirring dissonance… as these are the central issues that have always afflicted the human condition. My work proffers in this direction, to addresses these issues of import and contemporary significance.”
Mesquita lives and works in Goa, India. He heads the Vice~Versa Foundation.
